Narrating Friendship

Narrating Friendship

Narrating Friendship and the British Novel, 1760-1830. Milton Park: Routledge, 2017. Im Paperback veröffentlicht bei Routledge, 2019.

The study shows how friendship gives direction and shape to new ideas and novel strategies of plot, character formation, and style in the British novel from the 1760s to the 1830s. Proceeding from philosophical definitions of friendship as a bond that civilized public and private interactions and was essential for the attainment of happiness, British novels conceived the modern individual not in opposition to, but in interaction with society, contributing to and continuing Enlightenment debates about how to share the lives and the experiences of others.

Female Identity

Female Identity

Female Identity in Contemporary Zimbabwean Fiction. Bayreuth: Breitinger, 2005.

Situated at the interface of postcolonial criticism and gender studies, the study offers in-depth analyses of how Zimbabwean novels of the post-independence era combine oral narrative conventions with literary modes and genres of the written British tradition. The analyses focus on the identity construction and negotiation of the texts’ main female characters, arguing that Zimbabwean women’s identity is composed of traded layers and appropriated subject positions that appropriate the country’s colonial legacy as well as the aporias of contemporary culture.

Harry Potter

Heroism in the Harry Potter Series. Hrsg. Katrin Berndt and Lena Steveker. Farnham: Ashgate, 2011. Im Paperback veröffentlicht bei Routledge, 2016.

Taking up the various conceptions of heroism that are conjured in the Harry Potter series, this collection examines the ways in which the novels and films challenge the idealized forms of a somewhat simplistic masculinity associated with genres like the epic, romance and classic adventure story in order to develop new and genuine ways of expressing what a globalized world has applauded as ethically exemplary models of heroism based on responsibility, courage, humility and kindness.

Words and Worlds

Words and Worlds

Words and Worlds: African Writing, Theatre, and Society. Hrsg. Susan Arndt und Katrin Berndt. Trenton, NJ: Africa World Press, 2007.

This collection of essays by African writers, dramatists, and theatre practitioners such as Nuruddin Farah, Femi Osofisan, Lewis Nkosi, Susan Kiguli, and Zakes Mda offer new interpretations and rare insight in their readings of African literatures: addressing relationships between artists and audience, women and men, and Africa and Europe, the essays are wide-ranging thematically, but united in a common concern about the role of African fiction, theatre, writers, and artists in their countries socio-political and cultural processes and in transcontinental encounters.

Kreatives Afrika

Kreatives Afrika

Kreatives Afrika. SchriftstellerInnen über Literatur, Theater und Gesellschaft. Hrsg. Susan Arndt und Katrin Berndt. Wuppertal: Peter Hammer, 2005.

Was tut sich wirklich in Afrika?
