To celebrate 150 years of our Institute, the Chair of English Language Methodology presents “15 Decades of Good and Bad Teaching.” This entertaining lecture depicts teachers from English-language literature and film across the last 150 years. The event closes with an interactive vote to choose the best and the worst teacher on the list.

Conference: Authority in/and English and American Studies
Authority can be understood as the acknowledgement of asymmetrical hierarchies that result from differences in age, knowledge or expertise, and social, religious, or professional status (i.e., also different forms of capital in Bourdieu’s sense). While authority can be a necessary condition for success in various social, educational, and political contexts – policy making, teaching, or spectatorship –, it simultaneously bears the potential for abuse of power.
The one-day conference “Authority in/and English and American Studies” sets out to explore the question of how authority operates within and is relevant for the various disciplines within the Institute for British and American Studies.
